Welcome to week 2 from your school captains

Hello Carrum Community,

Welcome to your week 2 Term 3 Newsletter.

Hi, this is Austin and Thomas and this Term we have a lot of fun and exciting events that are happening and coming up here at Carrum Primary.

This Monday we had the 5\6 girls AFL division team and they tried their hardest and played together well. This Friday we have PJ day where you can wear your comfy oodies and  slippers so make sure to bring a gold coin donation! Mr Langford's farewell assembly is this week as well so it will be earlier at 2.30 so if you’d like, you can say goodbye and wish Mr Langford good luck at his new school, Overport. If you like you can bring your Melbourne scarfs, beanies or colours for the important assembly to wear over your PJS.

Just a few reminders: tomorrow is the teachers strike but if you are busy working you can send your kids to school but you need to let the office know ASAP. We had the Neds performance booked, but we had to reschedule this incursion and the new date will be August 13th. We are having a special performance to learn about never giving up and always having a growth mindset so this should be fun!

Next week our Prep to year 2 students will be starting swimming at Waves so make sure they have all their things ready!

On August the 19th the 3 / 4 students will be going to Camp Manyung, this could be their first camp!

On Friday our preps have been at school for 100 days! You might see them dressed up or couting 100 things!

Also, don’t forget to order your Sushi for Friday July 31st, the day before!

One more special note from our teachers, they would like to thank Team Kids and students for their yummy morning tea on Tuesday.

To finish we will end on a joke

  1. What is the tallest building in school?
  2. The library, because it has the most stories

Thanks
Thomas and Austin

Marine Ambassadors day out

Marine Ambassador Newsletter

Last Term, the Marine Ambassadors went to Namajira Park in Clayton South, and learnt about storm water catchments. Which stops rubbish from entering the wetlands. The MA team (Marine Ambassadors team) also tested the wetland water to see what the water quality was like. They came back with great results because the water was very clean. The MA team had to identify different frog calls, like the pobblebonk which you can find in our local wetlands. Lastly, our Marine Ambassadors went ponding and found a bloodworm, a dragon fly, nymph and a water flea. All of this indicated that Clayton local wetlands are clean. It emphasises the importance of regularly checking and maintaining  our local water ways.

We thank Kerry and Miss Shew for taking us and our parents for driving, we had a really great day out!

By the Marine Ambassadors, Laura, Will and Jordan.

A message from the garden

As spring approaches, thousands of migratory shorebirds and seabirds return to Victoria from the Northern Hemisphere between August and October. These birds are an important part of our environment, but they also increase the risk of diseases such as H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) entering Australia.

While the risk to people remains very low, bird flu can have serious consequences for poultry, including our much-loved school chickens. We all have an important role in helping keep them safe.

Over the past few weeks, we have noticed seagulls visiting our school every day to feed on food scraps left on the ground after recess and lunch. The more food that is left outside, the more wild birds are attracted to our school. Reducing the number of wild birds on our grounds is one simple way we can help protect our chickens.

How can we help?

Protect our chickens

  • Please do not feed or encourage wild birds near the chicken enclosure.
  • If you notice wild birds inside or around the chicken area, let a staff member know.

Support Nude Food

  • Bring lunches with as little packaging as possible.
  • Eat all your food where possible.
  • Make sure no food is left on the ground after recess or lunch.

Keep our school clean

  • Place all food scraps and rubbish in the correct bins.
  • Help pick up any litter if you see it.

Respect wildlife

  • Do not touch sick, injured or dead birds.
  • Tell a staff member immediately if you find a sick or dead bird at school.

Practise good hygiene

  • Wash your hands after being near animals and always before eating.

By keeping our school grounds clean and free of food scraps, we can discourage seagulls and other wild birds from visiting our school and reduce the chance of contact with our chickens.

Thank you for helping protect our animals, care for our environment and keep our school community safe.

A message and recipes from our Kitchen

This week, our students are celebrating by exploring Australia's native plants and learning from the knowledge of First Nations Peoples.

Students will discover Bush Tomato, Wattleseed, Lemon myrtle, Saltbush, Warrigal greens, Tasmanian Pepperberry, and berry myrtle tea, learning where they grow, how they have been used for thousands of years, and how they are enjoyed in modern Australian cooking.

Through harvesting, tasting and cooking with native ingredients, students will deepen their understanding of caring for Country, sustainability, and the importance of respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Thank you for sharing your time, enthusiasm and kindness with our Year 3/4 students. Your support helps create meaningful hands-on learning experiences where students build confidence, develop new skills and discover the joy of growing, cooking and sharing food together. We couldn't do it without you!

The recipes are below for you to try at home
