Last week our marine ambassadors were lucky enough to swim with some dolphins and see some seals and had a great day out.

We know the 1\2s enjoyed their mini beast incursion learning all about creatures and more.
Our school also had an environment day that Ruby in year 6 organised for the whole school with different activities and prizes. Thanks to the leaders that worked hard wih her on this day

For an end of year celebration the year 5\6s  and their teachers went to the gravity zone which was so much fun!

On Thursday we had an amazing Christmas concert and a big thank you to Miss Chivotti for all her hard work arranging that for us! The Christmas songs were spectactular!

Next Wednesday the year 6s also have their bike ride to Bicentennial park.

101 Days of School Prep Celebrations and dress up

On Wednesday 30th July our Preps Celebrated over 100 days at school with a 101 days clebration.

Since the first day of Prep the students have been recording the number of days at school. This focuses on continuous counting, skip counting, representing numbers in tens frames and recording and displaying the information.

The students and teachers are continuing to celebrate new learning as they progress through the first year of school.

The dress ups were impressive, the students were encouraged to dress up tocelebrate the 101 days.
Some students used the number decorated in their clothes or connected the idea with the Disney Story of 101 Dalmations by dressing up as a Dalmatian or wearing black and white dots.

Our year 6 Leaders interviewed some students on this special day:

A recipe from our Kitchen

LOOK at htis harvest from our wonderful garden. The students are cooking with sweet potato and here is a recipe you may like to try at home.

Wild Rice, Rocket and Sweet Potato Salad

Season:  Summer

Type:  Salad

Difficulty: Easy

Serves: approx. 30

Fresh from the garden: Rocket, sweet potatoes, green onion

Recipe source: https://cookieandkate.com/sweet-potato-arugula-wild-rice-salad-recipe/

Equipment:

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Peeler
  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping boards
  • Baking tray
  • Large bowl
  • Salad Spinner

Ingredients:

Salad

·      1 cup cooked wild rice

·      ½ teaspoon fine sea salt

·      2 medium sweet potatoes peeled and sliced into 1 cm cubes

·      1 ½ tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

·      ¾ cup raw pepitas

·      5 large loose handfuls of rocket

·      ½ cup crumbled feta or goat cheese

·      ½ cup thinly sliced green onion

·      ¼ cup dried cranberries

Dressing

·      ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

·      1 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, to taste

·      1 tablespoons Dijon mustard

·      ½ tablespoon honey

·      ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt

·      About 10 twists of freshly ground black pepper

What to do:

  1. Roast the sweet potatoes: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the cubed sweet potato on the pan, drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle with ¼ teaspoon of the salt. Toss until the sweet potatoes are lightly and evenly coated in oil. Arrange the sweet potatoes in a single layer and roast for 25 to 30 minutes, tossing halfway, until they are caramelized on the edges and tender when pierced through with a fork. Leave the oven on and let the sweet potatoes cool for a few minutes.
  2. To make the dressing, simply combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until thoroughly combined. Set aside.
  3. Combine the rocket, wild rice and roasted sweet potatoes in a large serving bowl or platter.
  4. Spread the pepitas on a frying pan. Do not add any oil. Gently fry until they begin to brown. They will burn very quickly, so be ready to immediately stop cooking them as they begin to brown.
  5. Spread the toasted pepitas over the salad. Top with the crumbled feta, green onion and dried cranberries.
  6. If you’re serving the salad immediately, go ahead and drizzle most of the dressing on top (you probably won’t use it all). Gently toss to combine, and let the salad rest for a few minutes so the rice has time to absorb some of the dressing. Serve.

What's happening in Mandarin this Term

Mandarin @ Carrum Primary School – Term 2 Snapshot

We’ve had a joyful and engaging start to Term 2 in Mandarin, with students across the school reconnecting with the language through songs, stories, movement and collaboration.

Prep

Our Prep students have been revisiting Chinese numbers from 1–10 through pronunciation practice, recognising characters, and using hand gestures to support their counting. They have especially enjoyed learning the song “Shǔ yī shǔ (“Let’s Count”), singing, counting, and moving along to the actions with lots of enthusiasm.

This term, they will begin exploring simple Mandarin greetings, such as saying hello and goodbye, and introducing their names. Through role-play and fun language games, students will build confidence using these everyday phrases in an engaging and supportive way.

Year 1 & 2

At the end of Term 1, Year 1 and 2 students explored the traditions of Lunar New Year, with a special focus on the legend of Nián. They were intrigued by how people used loud noise, colour red and fire to scare the monster away. A highlight for many was trying on lion dance costumes and practising a few simple movements!

As students settle back into learning this term, we have been focusing on building connection and confidence. We revisited counting and recognising numbers, with students reordering numbers from 1–10 to complete a Great Wall of China puzzle, bringing a fun and hands-on element to their learning.

Year 3 & 4

Our Year 3 and 4 students were excited to receive greeting cards from Seaford North Primary School at the end of last term. They took great interest in reading the lucky phrases and kind messages written in Chinese. This exchange gave students a genuine reason to engage with the language, while also encouraging them to reflect on appreciation and connection with others.

As students settle into Term 2, games like “shítou, jiǎndāo, bù” (rock, paper, scissors) and creating “human dragons” have filled our classroom with energy and laughter, bringing a sense of playfulness and teamwork.

Year 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 students wrapped up last term with a collaborative inquiry project on Chinese New Year. Working in teams, they researched and designed informative posters, carefully considering both content and presentation. It has been fantastic to see their teamwork, creativity and pride in sharing their learning with others.

Take a look at the photo gallery to see the amzing things happening in Mandarin classes.

Book Week Parade

The efforts were outstanding!

What a morning we had at our Book Week Parade!

Wizards, Witches, Where's Wally, Dog Man, Crayons, Lego, Mario, Princesses and Sports stars and so much more.. there was so much to be seen at our whole school parade. Please enjoy the photos below.

As well as the parade the classes enjoyed books and activities read by our year 5/6 students.

The Library has transformed into magic with the theme of this year....Book an Adventure, where book week has turned 80! The feature artist for the year, Jess McGeachin, has brilliantly captured this adventurous spirit in his artwork, which features a whimsical map filled with imaginary characters. Jess’ illustration invites young readers to embark on fantastical journeys, inspiring them to travel through the worlds that books open up. As an award-winning Australian picture book illustrator, Jess’ work encourages children to imagine, explore, and create their own adventures.  If you haven't had a look at our Library please do so.

The students also enjoyed a Scavengure Hunt around the school and have entered their responses, who knows there could be a PRIZE.

Thanks to Mrs Smith and Miss Remoundos for your hard work in setting up the libary with the help of some students, Eden, Taylor, Ayla, Evie S, Maisha and Lulu. We think it looks magnificent!

Footy Day last Term

Our  Footy Day was the last day of term, September 19th.

We had a whole parade in the courtyard, fun games in mixed groups and a special delivered lunch.
Thanks to Mr V and our sports leaders for organising such a fun day to finish the Term 3.
Those Brisbane Lions supporters will still be smiling!
