Welcome to week 4 from your school captains

Hello Carrum Community,

Welcome to your week 6 Term 3 Newsletter.

Good afternoon Carrum community. This is Ivy and Austin, your school captains for 2026.This term has is going so fast lets see what has happened the last few weeks;

On Thursday last week we had our first Subway day for this year and stay tuned for more to come as they will be once a term on a Thursday.

We had our whole school N.E.D performance about resilience and getting back up after hard times. N stands for Never give up, E stands for Encourage others, and D stands for Do your best. Our performer traveled all the way from America to do shows for schools around our community. He has been selling yoyos to pay for the next schools performance. So if you want to help other schools with their resilience and getting back up then you can buy a yoyo from the office.

Also last week 2 of our year 5 to 6 classes went to Carrum foreshore and picked up rubbish down there. From Wednesday to Friday this week our 5/6 students have our Democracy online incursion. Tomorrow is Mr J's last day as he is going on paternity leave for the rest of the year so a new teacher will take over from him. We wish him all the best with being a dad and hope he gets some sleep.

On the 27th of August at 9:15am we have our school book day. We can not wait to see what book character you are dressed up as. On the 28th of August we have a sushi day and keep a look out for one next term.

We have a free dress day coming up on September 2nd, make sure to bring a gold coin donation which is going towards new sport equipment and sport uniforms.

Lastly, we have our Father’s Day barbecue at 7:45 am on Thursday September 3rd. Make sure to buy your egg and bacon rolls online prior to the barbecue. We hope you have a great rest of your week and a great weekend. But before we go we have to end with a joke.....

Why do dragons love to read books?

They like stories with a fiery plot

Bird Flu

H5 Bird flu

Cases of H5 bird flu have been confirmed in birds across Australia, including in south-west Victoria.

Our school has steps to follow if sick or dead birds are found at or near our school.

If you see a sick or dead bird at or near the school, please let us know. If you find a sick or dead bird in the community, the advice from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is to:

  1. avoid contact and keep your distance
  1. record date, time, location and take photos
  1. report it to using an online form or through the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.

For current information about reporting, refer to DEECA’s H5 bird flu page.

For more information, you can check out these bird flu resources from the Australian Government.

We are also following precautions to help protect birds kept onsite at our school from bird flu. We are:

  • keeping feed and water away from wild birds  and encouraging students to eat before they go outside
  • using netting, roofing or fencing where practical
  • wearing clean boots and clothes when entering poultry areas.
  • Reducing who access the Run B Run.

Wellbeing - The Ned Show

Last Friday we had a whole school incursion, The Ned Show.

Our students learnt about Never Give up, Encourage others, Do your best!

The YoYo part of the show has captured our students attention. Before we start to think this is another fad, let's read some benefits of this old school fun toy.
https://www.thenedshow.com/yoyos.html
https://www.thenedshow.com/parents.html

Why Learn to Yo-Yo?

Yo-yoing is more than just a fun activity. It helps students develop important skills while having fun.

Improves Hand-Eye Coordination

Learning yo-yo tricks requires students to carefully coordinate their hand movements with what they see. Regular practice can help improve fine motor skills and coordination.

Builds Focus and Concentration

Performing yo-yo tricks takes attention and concentration. Students need to stay focused on the yo-yo's movements and think ahead to complete tricks successfully. Practising yo-yoing can help improve focus, persistence, and mental discipline, skills that support learning both in and out of the classroom.

Yo-yoing is a fun and engaging way for students to challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop valuable skills.

Supports Relaxation and Wellbeing

Yo-yoing can be a great way for students to relax and unwind. The repetitive movements can be calming and provide a positive break from daily pressures, helping students feel more settled and focused.

Encourages Creativity

As students learn new tricks and create their own combinations, they develop creativity and problem-solving skills. Yo-yoing encourages them to think differently, experiment, and express themselves in unique ways.

Builds Friendships and Connections

Yo-yoing brings people together through a shared interest. Students can learn from one another, share tricks, and encourage each other to improve. It provides opportunities to make new friends, build confidence, and be part of a supportive community.

Yo-yoing is a fun activity that helps students develop important life skills, supports wellbeing, and creates opportunities for positive social connections.

Develops Resilience and Perseverance

Learning new yo-yo tricks takes patience, practice, and determination. Students quickly learn that mistakes are part of the learning process and that improvement comes through persistence. As they overcome challenges and master new skills, they build confidence, resilience, and a positive "never give up" attitude.

Encourages Physical Activity

Yo-yoing is an active hobby that helps strengthen the muscles in the hands, wrists, and arms while improving coordination and dexterity. More advanced tricks can involve whole-body movement, making yo-yoing a fun way for students to stay active while developing their physical skills.

Yo-yoing combines fun, fitness, and skill-building, making it a rewarding activity that supports students' social, emotional, and physical development.
