Welcome to week 8 from Lola and Thomas

Hi everyone, it's Thomas and Lola, your school vice captains for 2026.

This week's school value is respect. The teachers will be looking out for students in the yard in in class showing this value.

Last week the grade 5 students caught the bus to P.R.S.C where they did some year 7 work and had a tour around the school! The STEAM rooms were a hit!

We had a lucky 4 day weekend because of a public holiday and a curriculum day. The teachers worked hard at school on Tuesday while the kids were at home, having fun!

On Thursday it was International Day Of Play. We played some games during recess and lunch, we also had an extended lunch, and in the afternoon some kids brought their favourite non-device game to play there was lots of card games, board games, and fun!

Mr Langford has been running tours for new families to our school each week. If you have a child that will be in prep in 2027, please let us know.

5/6A and 5/6B went to Carrum foreshore  today and found lots of rubbish to pick up, lucky it was such a nice day! We also had interschool sport at Aspendale Gardens, Mrs Riley rode her bike to watch us on her day off-thanks!

Next week is planning week for our teachers which means that classes will have all their specialist sessions in one day and the teachers can spend the day preparing for term 3. They’ll be super organised!

Thanks for reading

Prep Learning

It has been wonderful to watch the Preps engage in our Prep Paradise Playtime program. We have had a fabulous star with our first few Prep presenters creating amazing posters full of interesting pictures and facts, such as lightening, starfish, scorpions and electricity. The Prep have demonstrated their speaking and listening skills throughout the session and in particular shown real bravery when presenting in front of the cohort.

After our presenters, the Preps have completed a rotation which has helped the students develop their fine motor skills, collaborative and sharing abilities in a fun way. We have been very lucky to have a few parent helpers coming in each week to assist the groups and help with the clean up each week and we want to say a massive thank you!

We cannot wait to see what other interesting topics we will learn about throughout the year! Well done Preppies you are smashing it!

Junior School Council News

On the 24th we invite you to wear sports socks, or your silliest socks. We aim to raise money for new sport equipment and school basketball tops that will be used for years to come when we represent our school.

Have you guessed many jellybeans in the jar?

Hi I am Maisha,

I am in Year 5 here at Carrum Primary. I have been doing Gymnastics for over 5 years now and I really enjoy it as it helps me get strong and flexible. I am going to Queensland for a National competition for Gymnastics in September.

I am doing a fundraiser to make money to pay for the judges and my coach to be able to travel, to be part of this exciting opportunity! My group and I are all fundraising in different ways as the coaches are expected to pay for themselves, and this is not fair as they are volunteers.

How good are jellybeans? I know I like them, would you like to win a whole jar if you can guess how many are in the jar?

For part of my fundraising, I am holding a ‘guess the jellybean competition’ there will more than one major prize but some other prizes for closest guesses too.

It will $1 for 1 guess, $2 for 3 guesses and $5 for a whole family-up to 8 guesses.

Please support me to get my coach and judges to Queensland, happy Guessing.

We will keep this competition running for a few weeks after the holidays to give everyone a chance to guess. As well as 1st prize of the jar there is 8 extra prizes for the closest guesses, show in the picture above.

We would like your help-spread the word!

At Carrum Primary School, we are fortunate to have a unique learning environment that includes our farm, gardens, Wetlands and animal enclosures. These spaces provide valuable opportunities for students to connect with nature, learn about sustainability, and develop respect for living things.

Unfortunately, we continue to find large amounts of rubbish across the school grounds every day. Plastic wrappers, food packaging, drink containers and other waste are regularly found in our gardens, Wetlands and animal areas. While this rubbish may not always be deliberately placed there, wind can easily carry litter into sensitive areas.

This is becoming a serious animal welfare issue.

Yesterday, Pebble was found eating a piece of plastic packaging that had blown into the enclosure. Plastic and other rubbish can cause illness, injury, blockages and, in some cases, can be life-threatening for animals.

In addition, last week Pebble became unwell after eating citrus fruit that had been given or thrown into the enclosure. The citrus caused vomiting and distress. While food may be offered with good intentions, many foods that are safe for humans can be harmful to animals.

No food should ever be fed to any of the school animals unless directed by staff. Each animal has specific dietary requirements, and feeding inappropriate foods can cause serious health problems.

The problem extends beyond our farm. Our wetlands are home to frogs, birds, bees, insects and many other important species. Rubbish, sport balls and other waste can damage habitats and threaten the biodiversity that makes this area so special.

Adding more bins has been trialled in the past and did not significantly reduce litter. The solution requires all members of our community to take responsibility for their waste and support our Nude Food initiatives wherever possible. Reducing packaging, taking rubbish home when necessary, and ensuring all waste is placed securely in the correct locations can make a significant difference.

We also ask families to be mindful of dogs on school grounds outside school hours. Dogs must remain on a leash at all times, in accordance with local regulations. Staff have observed unleashed dogs entering areas near the farm and animal enclosures. There are occasions when animals have access to free-range areas, and uncontrolled dogs can create unnecessary stress and safety risks.

In addition, dog urine and faeces in garden beds present hygiene concerns. Many of the vegetables grown in these areas are used in our Kitchen Garden program, and students regularly work with the soil and plants. Animal waste can contaminate garden areas, creating health and safety risks for both students and staff.

We cannot protect our animals, wetlands and gardens without the support of our entire community.

Please help us:

  • Support our Nude Food initiatives and reduce unnecessary packaging.
  • Ensure all rubbish is disposed of responsibly.
  • Never throw food scraps into animal enclosures.
  • Never feed any of the school animals.
  • Keep our wetlands, gardens and animal areas free from litter.
  • Keep dogs on a leash at all times when visiting school grounds.
  • Respect the farm, animals and learning spaces.

Our animals rely entirely on us to keep them safe. Every piece of rubbish picked up, every food scrap kept out of enclosures, and every responsible action taken helps protect the wellbeing of our animals, our wetlands, and the many species that call our school home.

Together, we can create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for our students, animals and local wildlife.

Meet our ES stars

                             LOOK who is BACK

Our Friendly face of the school Bec. S is back after her much earned holiday to Bali with family. For those who don't know to much about her here is her little bio/snapshot!

Hi, I’m Bec!

I’ve been working here for 10 years. Being born and raised in Carrum, I’ve seen lots of changes in the area over the years. What are the chances of ending up working at the same school you went to as a kid? I honestly can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather work or live!

I first started here as a volunteer while my children were at school, then moved into an ES role in the classroom. In 2022, I made the move into the admin team. I love that I still get to see the kids every day when they pop into the office ?

I have two children and two stepchildren, so life is always busy! Our family is involved in many sports, and during summer you’ll usually find us at the cricket club. Most of our family plays cricket – including us girls! I’d say I enjoy the social side of the game a little more than my actual cricket skills… but that’s all part of the fun!

When I’m not at work, I enjoy catching up with family and friends, watching movies, doing puzzles, walking along the beach, and going on holidays. I recently travelled to Bali and loved exploring different parts of the island. It’s such a beautiful place with wonderful people, amazing scenery, and plenty of warm weather!
