Welcome to week 8 from Lola and Thomas

Hi everyone, it's Thomas and Lola, your school vice captains for 2026.

This week and next week's value is respect and teachers will be looking for people showing this value around our school.

We can’t believe it’s already week 8! Only 2 weeks left until holidays!

Last Friday we had our 3-6 house athletics day. Lots of students came back to school with ribbons in lots of colours. Plus, quite a few of our students made it to district. How great is that?

We have 2 students that are going to tell us about how they did on athletics day.

Q: How did you go in house athletics?

A: Jack M 5/6c: I got first place in High Jump, Long Jump, Hurdles, 200 metres and 800 metres. I also got second place in 100 metre sprint, shotput, discus and the relay for Wongim.

A: Euan C 5/6c: I got first place in all the running events . I got first in shotput, discus and I won the relay for Pun Pun.

Just a reminder that the Easter raffle is being drawn on the 31st and you can't buy tickets after the 27th. Tickets are $2 for 1 and 5$ for 3. We wish you luck! There is also a bonus giveaway for all classes.

This week is Harmony week, and on Friday you can wear a touch of orange. We want to make sure everyone feels like they belong. The 5/6A and B cohort will be reading to younger year levels about what Harmony day means and to teach them about differences in cultures and diversity.   Also on Friday the 5/6C and D cohort will be going down to Carrum foreshore.

Next week on Monday will be the Lighting Prem where all the 5 / 6’s will versus lots of other schools to see who will take the crown.

Thanks for reading and enjoy the rest of your week.

5/6 Learning

What's been happening in 5/6

Year 5/6 Goldfields Unit of Inquiry

Our Year 5/6 Students hit the Goldfields this Term! During this hands-on, play based learning unit, students had to go fossicking, panning and mining for gold (yes we actually spray painted rocks gold, and hid them). If anyone was lucky enough to find gold, they had to trade it in at the Assayers office for the going rate of gold that week. Students also had to build shelter, create shops to sell items, buy food etc. Each week, the price of gold varied and the amount of gold on the Goldfields also changed, gold was becoming scarce and the price of mining licences were increasing. The unit culminated with a reenactment of the Eureka Stockade where students tore up their licences, recited the Eureka oath and raised the Eureka flag.

There was a notorious bushranger that was worth 500 pounds for capture, he is still on the loose. The gold price for licences went up which wasn't fair!- Kai C

I found 8 ounces of gold and I was very happy- Luke

I really liked how the unit gave us a chance to play the game in real life and discover how it felt for those people on the Goldfields- Ryan S

I don't like how the troopers can get reinforcements to help capture you when looking for gold- Archer

Gold was everywhere at the start, then by the end the gold was all gone!- Noah S

I couldn't find any gold, but one man was so rich, he threw money on the floor and everyone went wild over it- Grace

Friends of Carrum Foreshore

Some of the Year 5/6 students headed to Carrum to be part of the Friends of Carrum Foreshore program. We walked down to Carrum beach to help pick up rubbish and keep our shores clean. Along the way we found lots of rubbish (from small to large) and even a bin lid!
