What a busy start to Term 3.

I hope everyone is staying warm and dry in this sudden burst of Winter weather.

Last Friday we were able to farewell Mr Langford in style. A great reflection from students, the school council and staff on his time at Carrum. It was great for our students to say goodbye and well done to Kai and Meila on their wonderful speech on behalf of the students.

    
            

Our Junior School Council also organised Pyjama Day and chose this year to donate to Guide Dogs Australia. This dress up day is a particular favourite of Carrum staff, and I know many students told me they just came straight to school after getting out of bed. I wonder if it made the morning hustle a bit easier for some families? It was great to see our teachers in their stylish and matching PJs too.

The school has been a bit quieter at the start of the week as our P-2 and Yr 5/6 students have spent the last three days participating in their first week of the swimming program. This program is a government initiative so all students can receive quality swimming and water safety education so primary school students can have the opportunity to learn how to swim and develop lifelong skills in water safety to reduce their risk of drowning and injury. This is an essential skill particularly for Carrum students to have living in a Bayside suburb close to water.

Congratulations to our Prep students as tomorrow they will celebrate 100 days of school. What an achievement and how fast this year has flown for our young students. I know the teachers have been busy planning for this day and have some great activities planned. As parents you must also be feeling very proud!

This week we have had some of our staff participate in Professional Learning to upskill in our whole school programs. We aim to have all staff educated in the Orton-Gillingham (OG) training which is an explicit synthetic phonics program that underpins our literacy programme and the Berry Street Educational Model. Both these courses are quite intensive, and our teachers are trained over four days. Like our students our teachers are continually learning to improve their practise which impacts student outcomes.

We have had our save the date flyer in the newsletter recently for the school performance, as a reminder this is September 8^th and 9^th stay tuned for costume requirements and more communication about official times.

Finally, a huge shout out to our Teamkids educators. Yesterday was Out of School Hours Educators Day and we are so grateful for the wonderful programmes Teamkids provide and the amazing support Renee and Declan give to our school.

How long have you been at Carrum: My Carrum journey started in 2023 as a placement student… and I loved it so much I never left! Last year was my very first year in my own classroom.
Why do you love coming to school: Every day is different! I get to laugh, learn and see my students’ smiley faces as they grow and shine.

How long have you been at Carrum: This is my first year at CPS after starting my teaching career at a school in Mitcham four years ago.
Why do you love coming to school: To see my student’s smiling faces and watch them continue to grow their confidence each and every day.

5/6 Inquiry 

In 5/6  we have been doing Adapt, Survive, and Thrive. We have all chosen one animal to research and adapt to a new environment.  

Our Favourite Part

Our favourite part of this whole adventure, is that we got to make our projects for a full school day (which is a full 5 hours!). In that school day we made two dioramas and one big, great trifold. We were so lucky that Mrs Blane brought clay to make the new adapted animals and she also provided the cardboard that we used. Some other things that people enjoyed are making their new animals, not only creating their posters but decorating them too. I can surely tell you that the teacher’s favourite part of this whole unit was watching all the kids, not only being creative but having fun at the same time!

What Did The 5/6 Classes Do For Inquiry? 

In 5/6 for Inquiry we have been learning about different animals and their adaptations. The adaptations we have been learning about are structural, behavioural and physiological. We had to choose one animal and adapt it to a new environment. Before we could make up the animal we had to research some other animals that live there and their adaptations. For example I chose the Dingo and I had to move it to the Pacific ocean which was very challenging! My favourite part about the project was creating and making our adapted animal, I created a diorama!

What did the 5/6 ‘s do for inquiry?

In 5/6 for inquiry, we have been doing a unit called Adapt, Survive, and Thrive, and it is about animals. We have all chosen an animal that we are interested in, and researched everything about it. The 5/6‘s then chose a new habitat to put our animal in. We had to then research all the animals that live in that new habitat. We gave our animal some of the adaptations that those animals had, to help our animal survive. We gave the animal some structural, behavioral and physiological adaptations, so we had then created a new animal. The 5/6‘s spent a whole day on Monday, creating beautiful projects to showcase for you on Thursday after lunch at 2:10!  We made trifolds, posters, diaramas, clay models and all kinds of things that presented our original animal, its new habitat and all the adaptations we gave it.

What was my favourite part? 

My favourite part of this unit was definitely creating my project. I made a trifold, and two clay models. I loved how fun it was, and that I could use my creativity during this exciting project.

What did I learn?

I learned a lot! I now know all about what adaptations are, and that there are structural, behavioral and physiological adaptations. Structural adaptations are things on the outside of an animal that help them survive in their habitat. Behavioral adaptations are things they choose to do, and physiological adaptations are things that are on the inside. I also learnt everything about the Hippopotamus, which was my original animal, and I am now very knowledgeable on animals. This was definitely one of my favourite inquiry units!
