Principals Message Term 2 Week 5

Hi Carrum Families,

This week our teachers and students celebrated Education Week. We had a big celebration day on Wednesday as our student leaders and specialist teachers ran Expo Day. The students had a great day completing activities that showcased the great learning programs we have In Mandarin, STEAM, Art and PE. It was great to see the way our older students supported the younger students to participate in the activities in their multiage groups. Thank you to our amazing specialist teachers for organising a great day for the students.

Well done to all the students who competed at the District Cross Country last Friday. They all did their best and represented the school very well. We are excited to share that we have 11 students from Grade 3-6 competing at the Division Cross Country next Wednesday 27th May, at Cornish College. This is a great achievement, and they all should be proud. We wish the students all the best for Wednesday and Ms Ami will be there to support them during the event.

The Prep transition sessions we have held during term 1 and 2 have been going well. We have had great participation in our school tours and information sessions. It has been so fantastic to meet new families and see lots of siblings who will be coming to school next year. In a change to the enrolment process this year enrolments need to be entered via the Departments Student Insight Platform. Information relating to the new enrolment process is on our website at- https://www.carrumps.vic.edu.au/page/3/Enrolment.  Thank you to the families that have already completed this process if you need any assistance with completing the enrolment process, please contact the office.

As part of our transition program, it was lovely to have the students from PB visit Carrum Family and Day Care Centre to participate in a session last week. Later in the term we have more visits planned and we will also be visiting Hope Early Learning Centre. These visits are a great way for our school to continue to connect with our local kinder and childcare centres. Our students love visiting the centres and participating in different developmental play activities. Later in the term we will also be offering some Step into Prep sessions for families to book into that will support with their transition to primary school. More information about these sessions shared over the coming days.

Looking ahead to next week, on Monday our Grade 3/4 and 5/6 students will be participating in a Think U Know session that will focus on being safe online. This session will be run by Moorabbin Police Proactive Policing Unit are a follow up to the parent session run earlier in the year by the Federal Police. The topics discussed in the presentations are linked to the relevant year level within the current Australian Curriculum. More information about this session has been shared on Compass this week. Please contact Mrs McGregor at the school if you have any questions about these sessions.

Finally, please remember that we have a Curriculum Day on Tuesday 9th June. This is the day after the King’s Birthday Public Holiday and will be a moderation day for staff as they complete Semester 1 reports. TeamKids will be running a Curriculum Day program for families that may need to access this service.

Thank you for your ongoing support and I hope you have a great end of the week and weekend.

Kind regards,

Clem Langford

What's happening in Mandarin this Term

Mandarin @ Carrum Primary School – Term 2 Snapshot

We’ve had a joyful and engaging start to Term 2 in Mandarin, with students across the school reconnecting with the language through songs, stories, movement and collaboration.

Prep

Our Prep students have been revisiting Chinese numbers from 1–10 through pronunciation practice, recognising characters, and using hand gestures to support their counting. They have especially enjoyed learning the song “Shǔ yī shǔ (“Let’s Count”), singing, counting, and moving along to the actions with lots of enthusiasm.

This term, they will begin exploring simple Mandarin greetings, such as saying hello and goodbye, and introducing their names. Through role-play and fun language games, students will build confidence using these everyday phrases in an engaging and supportive way.

Year 1 & 2

At the end of Term 1, Year 1 and 2 students explored the traditions of Lunar New Year, with a special focus on the legend of Nián. They were intrigued by how people used loud noise, colour red and fire to scare the monster away. A highlight for many was trying on lion dance costumes and practising a few simple movements!

As students settle back into learning this term, we have been focusing on building connection and confidence. We revisited counting and recognising numbers, with students reordering numbers from 1–10 to complete a Great Wall of China puzzle, bringing a fun and hands-on element to their learning.

Year 3 & 4

Our Year 3 and 4 students were excited to receive greeting cards from Seaford North Primary School at the end of last term. They took great interest in reading the lucky phrases and kind messages written in Chinese. This exchange gave students a genuine reason to engage with the language, while also encouraging them to reflect on appreciation and connection with others.

As students settle into Term 2, games like “shítou, jiǎndāo, bù” (rock, paper, scissors) and creating “human dragons” have filled our classroom with energy and laughter, bringing a sense of playfulness and teamwork.

Year 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 students wrapped up last term with a collaborative inquiry project on Chinese New Year. Working in teams, they researched and designed informative posters, carefully considering both content and presentation. It has been fantastic to see their teamwork, creativity and pride in sharing their learning with others.

Take a look at the photo gallery to see the amzing things happening in Mandarin classes.

Fundraising

A HUGE thanks to our families in your recent support in our school fundraising.

Last Saturday we had a fundraising BBQ at Family Fresh Butcher, we sold sausages, hamburgers and egg and bacon rolls. Special thanks to the families and staff that helped on the day volunteering their time, also to their kids-who really helped boost sales.

We managed to raise over $1,000 which will go towards improving our animals and wetlands.

The butcher works with local community and clubs they donate the bread, bacon and eggs to stallholders and very kindly discounted our meat. Please give them a visit as their produce and variety is outstanding! They also have a family meals catering company (the meals are great)
