Principals Message Term 1 Week 9

Hi Families,

It has been a big couple of weeks at Carrum Primary School. When asking the students about their day they have shared the fun things they are learning about during inquiry this term. A highlight for our 5/6 students has been the Gold Rush topic. Students have loved learning about what it was like to be on the gold fields and the struggles the miners who have had to endure. I believe the students are still trying to find Captain Melville the bush ranger who stole some gold form some of the miners. It has been a very fun experience that the students have enjoyed.

Our Grade 3/4 Swimming Program at Waves Leisure Centre in Highett is now underway. The students did well in their first few sessions. We did have to swap the Tuesday session to Thursday this week, and students and staff managed this change well. Next week the program will run on Monday- Wednesday as previously communicated. We thank you for your continued support to help your child/ren with be organised each day with her swimming bag.

Another big event this week was the Summer Lightning Premiership. Our Grade 5/6 students competed against other schools in the district in Cricket, Kickball, Basketball and Volleyball. It was a big day and at the end we had some very tired students. The teachers said they were amazing in the way they competed and behaved and we are all very proud of them. Thank you to Ms Ami and the teachers for their coaching of the teams.

This Friday we are holding our World Maths Day activities. Students will be working in Prep-2 and Grade 3-6 groups on a variety of Maths based problem solving activities. Miss Kenner and the Numeracy PLT team have worked with the staff to come up with hands on activities for the students to participate in, this is a normal school uniform day, no dress ups! We are also looking forward to welcoming lots of Kinder students to the school on Friday who will be participating in the first of our early childhood education sessions. This session will provide students with a hands-on maths lesson, and an experience of what school is like at Carrum Primary School. Later in the year there will be other sessions available to pre-school students relating to literacy and wellbeing. Please keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for any upcoming events.

I do have some news to share in relation to Clare Bennett our Business Manager who has recently accepted the Business Manager role at Black Rock Primary School. Clare has been at Carrum Primary School for the past five years and has certainly run a tight ship in the office. We are very grateful for the work she has done in her time at CPS and wish her all the best for the future. Clare has shared that she will miss our community and has appreciated everyone's support during her time at our school. We do have a business manager role advertised and will endeavour to have someone appointed into the position by the beginning of Term 2.

I also wanted to share that Jess Loudon has taken maternity leave as she and her husband Scott prepare for the birth of their first child. We are very excited for them and know they will be amazing parents. We will let you know more when we hear baby news.

As we come to the end of term, we ask that parents and carers please log into Compass to update any unexplained absences. If you have any difficulty with this and require assistance, please contact the office. We thank you for continuing to update this information to ensure these records are accurate.

Looking ahead to next term we will have a parent information session on Thursday the 23rd of April at 3.30 relating to cyber safety and new rules around social media. This is an area that we need to work together on to best support our students to navigate their way through online communication and applications. More information including the links to access the session will be shared with families between now and the end of term.

We will be holding an assembly this Friday 27th March at 2:40pm to finish the week. This will be the last assembly of the term as next week the term finishes on Thursday 2nd April at 2:30pm (Due to the ‘Good Friday’ public holiday on Friday 3rd April). Students will be dismissed from their classrooms at the conclusion of the day.

Thank you again for your ongoing support.

Kind regards,

Clem Langford
Principal

Congratulations

A BIG congratulations to Asha Buzza who attended Regionals on Wednesday after he achieved great results from District and Division. Asha placed 5th and will now compete in a State level. AMAZING.

Asha is also attending the 2025 All Schools Cross Country champs at Bundoora this Saturday ay 10am in the under 14 3km race, we look forward to hearing how he goes.

Well done Asha, all that training is definitely paying off and we are thrilled that you represent Carrum so proudly. We know you will go far and look forward to hearing how you go next. For now, keep running and look after those legs!

For some background understanding......The Primary School Program partnership is also in partnership with the
Invergowrie Foundation.
The Program offers schools a helping hand by designing and delivering STEM learning programs for primary students.

Drawing on expertise, Monash work with teachers, students and school leaders at schools to develop bespoke and meaningful STEM learning experiences. While each program is unique, enhancing educational equity and using technology to provide opportunities underpin all that is done. By partnering with schools both in person and virtually, school communities like Carrum are supported while co-creating lessons.

How lucky are we to be involved!

In the Kitchen and Garden this week with 3/4

A very kid friendly meal week.... with a twist

This week we cooked some some traditional food and some basics that are much better made from scratch than from a jar. Have you ever made mayo with eggs? Well it tastes better with the freshest eggs from Carrum PS.

Have a look at the Daikon in the picture the students are holding, we used this to make chips instead of potato.

The students cooked

Burgers
Chips
Bread Rolls
Cooked eggmayonaise

If you would like the recipes please ask Jane in the kitchen, she is happy to share.

Marine Ambassadors day out

On Thursday the Marine Ambassadors Evelyn, Evie Luke and Ahliya went to Namatjira Park, Calyton South.

With Miss Shew for the whole day. We started off by working with the dolphin research institute staff and went to a litter trap to see how much rubbish there is and learn about how much litter is in our oceans and rivers. We found out that animals sometimes make their homes in these litter traps and it’s not the best for them.

After this we had recess and not long after that we went to participate in more activities. There was a frog ID, water clean test an water level checking where we tested the electricity conduction, tested PH levels and more. Then we did ponding,  this is where we had a net and had to scoop up to find creatures, most were red worms but at the end we found something we couldn’t work out or even catch which we thought was a water skimmer!

During our groups we worked with students from other schools and were partnered up with different groups for the day.

After lunch we did a litter clean up, there was so much rubbish, which isn’t great, we poured it all into a huge pile and put it into bags to take away.

Thanks to our parents for driving us on the day and to Miss Shew for helping us and taking care of us on the day.
